The Concept of a Flipped Classroom

If a group of random people are stopped and asked about education and teaching, over 85% would mention a classroom in which a teacher is the centre of focus where he or she is disseminating information to a number of students. This has and still is the concept of teaching applied for most schools.

Here are a few reasons why.

Responsibility and personalization

Traditional teaching may fall short of this. In a classroom of about twenty students, the lecturer has a limited ability to reach out to every student and discover the part where he or she needs help. However, personalization and responsibility are two characters the flipped concept has impacted students as it creates a personalized communication between the lecturer and the student such that students are responsible for their academic progress.

Availability

For those students who miss classes due to unforeseen circumstances, the lectures they miss becomes a class that cannot be recovered. The students are then left with the option of borrowing notes and reverting to textbooks to bridge the gap. However, with the flipped classroom concept, students do not get left behind as they can catch up at any time with the already uploaded videos which can be reviewed at any time.

Guidance

There has been a huge communication gap between students and lecturers over the years due to the traditional model of teaching. It is quite challenging for a lecturer take note of the level of assimilation of his students due to the number of students and this eventually has a negative effect on the students who slowly catch up. However, a flipped classroom offers active learning and offers lecturers as guides and not necessarily a ‘teacher’.

The flipped classroom concept is a budding concept which is generally being accepted across the world. This strategy may not be applicable in universities that have a large number of students as this will require a lot of technological changes in the school. Also, the cost of education which is under a lot of criticism concerning expenses would rise to an uncontrollable level.

However, technology is gradually taking over and it would come as no surprise if this concept eventually comes to stay.
